Hydrogen Peroxide for Mold: Concentration and Surfaces
The brown bottle in the bathroom cabinet has been there since somebody's scraped knee two summers ago. It goes on the grout behind the toilet, foams for a second, and the foam quits. Ten minutes later the black line looks the same, so the conclusion feels obvious: buy something stronger. The bottle wasn't weak — it was old, it got wiped off after forty seconds, and the grout it landed on had growth living below the surface.
Why concentration is the wrong lever
Hydrogen peroxide is water with an extra oxygen atom it doesn't want to keep. That instability is the mechanism: it oxidizes what it touches and decomposes into water and oxygen, leaving no chlorine residue and no salt film. The fizz on a moldy surface is the reaction running — organic material carries catalase, an enzyme that rips peroxide apart on contact.
The same instability works against you. Light, warmth and trace metals speed the breakdown, which is why the bottle is opaque brown and why labels give roughly three years sealed but a far shorter window — often quoted as one to six months — once the cap comes off. So the useful question isn't "how strong" but "how long does it stay wet." Misted on a vertical tile wall, it runs off or evaporates in a couple of minutes — well short of the 10-minute dwell printed on disinfectant labels. Doubling the concentration doesn't fix a dwell-time problem; a peroxide-soaked paper towel laid over the spot does. On porous material none of it reaches what matters: EPA's position is that growth rooted in soaked drywall, carpet padding or ceiling tile gets discarded, because surface disinfection can't reach the hyphae inside. Grade, surface, dwell time: the working table
Grades differ by more than a number. 3 % is the drugstore standard, 6 % ("20 volume") a salon developer, 12 % and 35 % food-grade concentrates meant for dilution. At 35 % the liquid whitens skin on contact and demands goggles and chemical-resistant gloves — hazard with no upside indoors. Diluting it 1 part to 11 parts water lands near 2.9 %.

Two rules override every row. Never combine peroxide and vinegar in one bottle: together they form peracetic acid, harsher than either alone — one agent, rinse, then the other. And peroxide is no substitute for physical removal: EPA's home guidance calls detergent, water and scrubbing enough on hard surfaces, because dead growth still has to come off the wall.
Picking your case
Bathroom grout and shower corners. The 3 % bottle with a $2–6 screw-on spray head is the whole kit: spray, wait ten minutes, re-wet if it dries, scrub, rinse, dry. If the black line sits in the caulk bead rather than the grout, no liquid saves it — see grout, caulk and the black line.

Painted walls. Fine for a surface film on a bathroom wall or window reveal. If the board is soft or the patch keeps returning, the water source is behind it — the cut-out rule is the next step.
Then measure the air. Cleaning without drying resets the clock: hold 30–50 %RH, treat anything sustained above 60 %RH as the real problem, and let a $15 hygrometer say which you're in.
Common mistakes
- Buying a stronger grade instead of waiting longer. A 35 % concentrate is a burn hazard that solves nothing a 10-minute dwell at 3 % wouldn't. Contact time is the free variable.
- Mixing peroxide with vinegar in one spray bottle. That makes peracetic acid. Use one agent, rinse, then the other if you want both.
- Skipping the spot test on anything colored. Peroxide bleaches textiles and pigment. Fifteen minutes on a hidden corner costs nothing and prevents a permanent pale patch.
- Treating porous material that's already soaked. Drywall, carpet padding and ceiling tile with growth inside get bagged and replaced. Spraying the face cleans only what you can see.
