Eleven tabs open, and each one crowns a different winner. One roundup calls a 70-pint machine the best buy; the box in your cart says 50 pints and looks like the same appliance. A third page recommends a unit that, three reviews down, ices over in a 55 °F crawl space. None of that is a model problem — four decisions come before the model, and once they're settled the shortlist is two or three units that all work.

Short answer: Decide capacity, temperature, drainage and noise first, and the model mostly picks itself. Living space of 500–1,200 sq ft takes 20–30 pints on the 2019 DOE scale ($150–260); a damp basement takes 35–50 pints ($200–350). Anywhere that drops below 65 °F — garage, crawl space, unheated basement — needs auto-defrost or a desiccant unit, not more pints. Then pick drainage (tank, gravity hose, or a pump at +$40–70) and, for a bedroom, under 45 dBA. Hold 30–50 %RH per EPA and never let a room sit above 60 %RH.

Why the pint number on the box isn't the number in old reviews

In 2019 the Department of Energy changed the test conditions: capacity used to be rated at 80 °F and 60 %RH, now it's 65 °F and 60 %RH — closer to how a basement feels. Cooler air holds less water, so the same hardware prints a smaller number: a machine once sold as 70 pints is labeled about 50 today, a 50 became a 30. Nothing inside changed.

That rescale is why the roundups contradict each other. A piece written in 2017 and lightly refreshed since still recommends "70-pint" units that no longer exist under that name, and listings recycle the old copy. Before comparing two numbers, check both are on the same scale — the box should say DOE 2019 or carry an AHAM certification mark.

More pints doesn't mean drier, either. An oversized unit hits its setpoint in twenty minutes, stops, drifts up, restarts — and each restart is the loud part. Short cycling holds %RH less steadily than a smaller machine running long and slow.

Temperature decides the machine type outright. A compressor chills a coil below the dew point and drips condensate into a tank — below roughly 65 °F that coil starts frosting, and the unit spends its time defrosting instead of drying. Auto-defrost covers the mid-50s by cutting the compressor and running the fan to melt the ice. Colder than that, a desiccant unit is the honest answer: a silica-gel rotor that works down to about 34 °F, draws more power for the same water, and returns air a few degrees warmer.

What size, what type, what it costs

Match the space to capacity, then read across to the machine type. These are 2019-scale pints per day; go up a size only if the room is genuinely wet — condensation standing on the walls, a hygrometer parked above 65 %RH.

Two rows are a different purchase: crawl-space and whole-house units are semi-permanent installs with a pump and a drain line, not something you carry down and empty. And a closet's air holds about an ounce of water — nothing there needs pints.

Working the four decisions in your own room

Start with measurement, not a cart. Leave a $15–25 hygrometer in the damp spot for 48 hours, reading morning and evening. Under 50 %RH with no musty smell, the fix is airflow — a bath fan that vents outside, a dryer duct that isn't crushed — and a $200 appliance will collect nothing. Above 60 %RH, buy; EPA puts the indoor target at 30–50%.

Then work the other three:

Two limits. A dehumidifier is prevention, not remediation: EPA's rule of thumb puts visible patches under about 10 square feet on hard, non-porous surfaces in DIY territory, while anything larger — or growth inside a wall cavity or the HVAC — belongs to a certified professional. And drying air does nothing for radon, a soil gas: EPA's action level is 4.0 pCi/L, and only a test tells you your number.
